5. The power of place

"Emotion is to discover our own being in the world... we inhabit the landscape and the landscape dwells in us."

(Juhani Pallasmaa)

In Ekkoabit we explore the power of Place through new relationships between the senses and matter-energy. Through rethinking our relationship with the time-space of places we can develop new strategies that help us to be less vulnerable to the environmental changes that await us.

  • To develop a strong sensitivity to the surrounding environment, what is close and recurrent.
  • To deepen the experience of the diversity of local as opposed to the 'one size fits all' of global.
  • To value the rites and traditions that identify us with the world.
  • Revalue and stimulate the sensory qualities (sounds, smells, touch, taste, etc.) of biodiversity.
  • Innovate with materials and traditional systems.
  • Adapt and revalue vernacular and rural culture.
  • To value the community aspects that identify us with a territory.
